It's a lot harder today for a student to put themselves through college. Combination of low wages and much higher costs. Not so much the cost of the school, just the cost of living while you go to school. Most of the students I know who don't get any money from their parents work at least two part time jobs and still have to get student loans, grants, scholarships, etc. One grad student works 20-25 hours a week stocking shelves at a local store, 10-15 hours a week as a teaching assistant, and 10-15 hours a week as a research assistant; all while working on a master's degree in Geology. She's also shares a two bedroom apartment with three other people to cut costs. I don't think I could have done that when I was 23.
